Microsuction vs Irrigation - Which Earwax Removal Method is Right for You?

If you've been told you need your ears cleared and been offered a choice of methods, you'd be forgiven for not knowing where to start. Microsuction and irrigation are both safe, effective options, but they work differently, and one may suit you better than the other depending on your ears and your preferences. Here's what you need to know.

Microsuction

Microsuction uses a very fine, sterile probe connected to a gentle suction device to draw wax out of the ear canal. Your audiologist wears high-magnification glasses throughout, giving them a clear, close-up view of exactly what they're doing, so it's precise and controlled from start to finish.

Because there's no water involved, it tends to be the preferred option for people who've been told to keep water out of their ears, or who simply don't like the sensation of anything wet in the canal. It also requires no preparation beforehand so, you can come straight in without using softening drops first.

Most people find it surprisingly quick and comfortable. The sound of the suction can feel a little odd the first time, but it's not unpleasant.

Irrigation

If you had your ears syringed years ago and remember it being a bit of an experience, it's worth knowing that irrigation is a very different thing. Instead of a manual syringe, we use an electronic machine that delivers a carefully controlled, warm water flush into the ear canal. It's much gentler and far more precise than the old method.

Irrigation works well for most types of wax build-up. If your wax is particularly hard or impacted, we'll often ask you to use softening drops for five to seven days beforehand - it makes the process easier and more comfortable for you and more effective.

So which one should you choose?

We'll check your ears at the start of the appointment and recommend whichever method is most suitable. If you have a strong preference, or a reason to avoid water in your ears, just mention it when you book and we'll take that into account.

Both methods are carried out by our HCPC-registered audiologists, and both are available at our Grange-over-Sands and Edinburgh branches, as well as through our home visit service if getting to us isn't practical.
