Protective Ear Moulds

Hearing loss caused by noise is permanent. Unlike some other types of hearing loss, it can't be treated or reversed, it just accumulates over time. The good news is it's almost entirely preventable, and custom ear protection is one of the most effective ways to do that.

Off-the-shelf foam earplugs do a job, but they're uncomfortable for extended wear, often don't fit properly and can muffle sound in ways that make them impractical for a lot of situations. Custom ear moulds are shaped to your ears, which means a better seal, better protection and a lot more comfort.

Who are they for?

Custom ear protection suits a wide range of people and situations:

Musicians and regular gig-goers  - Standard earplugs reduce all frequencies indiscriminately, which makes music sound dull and flat. Musician's plugs are designed to reduce volume evenly across frequencies, so the music still sounds like music - just at a safer level.

People exposed to noise at work - Anyone working regularly around machinery, power tools, construction or other loud environments. Employers have a legal responsibility to protect staff from excessive noise, and custom moulds are more effective and far more likely to be worn consistently than generic alternatives. We're happy to work with employers directly to provide protection for their teams.

Swimmers - Swim plugs keep water out of the ear canal, which is particularly useful for anyone prone to swimmer's ear or ear infections, and for children who swim regularly.

Motorcyclists and motorsport enthusiasts - Wind noise at speed causes more hearing damage than many people realise. Custom plugs reduce that without affecting awareness of your surroundings.

Shooters and hunters - The sudden sharp noise of a gunshot is one of the fastest ways to damage hearing. Specialist shooter's plugs can be designed to allow normal sounds through while blocking the sudden impact of a shot.

People who struggle to sleep - A custom sleep plug fits comfortably even when lying on your side, blocking out snoring, traffic, or other disturbances without the discomfort of standard foam plugs.

Frequent flyers  - Specialist plugs can reduce pressure discomfort and cabin noise during flights.

How it works

It's a quick, straightforward appointment. We'll have a chat about what you need the protection for, take impressions of your ears.

This is a painless process that takes just a few minutes, and your custom moulds will be made to fit your ears exactly.

When they arrive, we'll make sure they fit correctly and show you how to look after them.
All our ear impressions are taken by our HCPC-registered audiologists.

A note on noise levels

Damage can start at 80dB - roughly the volume of heavy traffic or a lawnmower. A concert or nightclub can reach 110dB or more. Even short exposure at those levels adds up over a lifetime.

If you're already noticing changes to your hearing and think noise may be a factor, a free hearing test is a sensible place to start.

Get in touch or book a free hearing test and we'll take it from there.
